Oswego Canal
Between 1905 and 1918, the original Erie Canal (see history on Erie Canal Page) was significantly changed and became the main branch of the newly formed New York State Barge Canal System. Today, the Oswego branch of this system runs from the Erie Canal near Syracuse, NY to Lake Ontario. It is about 24 miles in length and is actually a canalization of the Oswego River. From the Erie canal to Lake Ontario is a descending journey.
