Champlain Canal
Between 1905 and 1918, the original Erie Canal (see history on Erie Canal Page) was significantly changed and became the main branch of the newly formed New York State Barge Canal System. Today, the Champlain branch of this system runs from Troy, NY northward to Whitehall, NY at the southern end of Lake Champlain, following the Hudson River. It is about 63 miles long.
