Arkansas Post Canal
The Arkansas River waterway navigation project, as described in the 1983 U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Navigation Chart book for the McClellan-Kerr Arkansas River Navigation System:
" The development of the Arkansas River for navigation, additional flood control, hydroelectric power generation, and other purposes is the largest civil works project ever undertaken by the Corps of Engineers. It was authorized by congress in the River and Harbor Act of July 24, 1946, and construction began in 1957."
The McClellan-Kerr Arkansas River Navigation System is approximately 448 miles long and begins at the mouth of the White River as it converges with the mighty Mississippi River. Beginning at the Mississippi, waterway navigation proceeds up the White River for 9.8 miles. To join the Arkansas River with the White River, the Arkansas Post Canal of about ten miles was constructed. At waterway navigation mile 10.3 within the canal, Norell Lock & Dam was constructed. At waterway navigation mile 13.4 within the canal, Lock No. 2 was constructed. The canal then passes through Merrisach Lake for another 1.2 miles, ending at the Arkansas River, waterway navigation mile 19.0.
